by Susana Arevalo, February Focus Louisville –
First, the program is a great way to be more connected to the community and learn about the city’s history, achievements and challenges. Learning more about the place where I recently moved increased my sense of belonging and also helped me feel proud of calling this place home.
Second, the program is filled with talks from prominent leaders in the community including the Director of Chamber of Commerce, the Director for the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts and the Chief of Louisville Metro Police – just to name a few. Being able to hear from experts in their respective fields was a great learning experience.
Finally, the program does a great job of exposing the many needs the community has. Among other things, we learned about the low education levels in Kentucky and the challenges this presents to the community both for economic development and quality of life. I was particularly moved by a visit to Seneca High School, which is considered a persistently low-achieving school. After learning how I can make an impact in someone’s life, I have committed to become a student’s mentor and dedicate an hour of my time to have bi-weekly meetings. Therefore, I believe the biggest achievement of this program is taking participants’ inspiration and turning it into commitments.
I thoroughly enjoyed Focus Louisville. It brings together a very diverse group of people and is a great way to network with talented individuals. I think it is a valuable opportunity for both locals and newcomers to learn more about the community but, more importantly, to get involved and make a difference!
