Bingham Fellows quiz Fifth Third and Humana employees

RU smarter than a fifth grader? Following the lead of the TV show, “Are you smarter than a 5th grader?” a team of 2007 Bingham Fellows capitalized on the familiar while impressing upon a target demographic the importance of math and science to the future technology needs of our community.

Last week, employees at Humana and Fifth Third were challenged to answer questions consistent with fifth grade level math and science concepts as well as questions about the United States’ standing in science and math education compared to competing countries.

The survey was emailed to 8,400 employees. Within two days, 4,979 employees visited the survey with 3,859 employees completing it in its entirety and 591 providing partial responses - an impressive 46% completion rate.

The goal was to encourage employees to learn more about the importance of the GE Foundation Math and Science Initiative to support Jefferson County Public School’s Math and Science curricula by visiting the new website, www.AddItUpL ouisville.com. During the survey period, the website recorded a significant increase (304%) in the number of hits.

Jeff Kosse (LL '06, BF '07), chief financial officer at Fifth Third Bank, noted “The theme proved to be fun and engaging for the employees resulting in a morale builder for our company.” Based on the interest level and the response rate of the employees in the pilot project, the Bingham Fellows are eager to provide this opportunity to other employers in the Louisville Metro area.

This is a great way to engage our community in connecting the dots between strong math and science education and the future employment opportunities of our children and grandchildren.

Companies interested in signing up for the next round of the survey project should contact Bingham Fellow - Cathe Dykstra (Focus '04, LN '06, BF '07) at Project Women, 584.8090 or by email.

The “Financial Services” Work Group includes: Patrick Michael, Woodward, Hobson & Fulton, LLP; Alan Wheatley, Humana Inc.; Cathe Dykstra, Project Women; Jeff Kosse, Fifth Third Bank; Mickey Wilhelm, University of Louisville JB Speed School of Engineering; and, Greg Greenwood, Ernst & Young, LLP.
