Bingham Fellows projects start to add up!
; The Bingham Fellows Class of 2007 is challenged with creating projects to involve the total community in support of the math/science initiative and curriculum changes funded by the GE Foundation grant to JCPS. Their projects are evolving quickly and include some fun, interesting and exciting ideas. Check them out! Are you as smart as a fifth grader? - The team sent an e-mail to all Louisville-based employees of Fifth Third Bank and Humana inviting them to complete a survey designed to build awareness of the need to develop more college-bound math and science students. They received over 4,500 responses! "This coffee brought to you by chemistry!" - The team produced banners that "interrupt" its target audience with messages about the everyday use of math and science. Banners direct people to a website to learn more about the "Add it Up" initiative. Messages include items like, "This coffee brought to you by chemistry." on a banner placed at Heine Brothers, Bluegrass Brewing Company and the Villages at Westport, among other locations. Fun facts on math and science - The team provided bookmarks distributed to parents of children in the YMCA CEP programs. This team worked in partnership with Metro United Way, the businesses displaying banners, and others to broaden the reach of their bookmarks. One side of the bookmark showcases statistics and fun facts regarding the U.S.'s global standing in education. Rapping about math and science - This group produced and distributed a public service announcement in the form of a TV commercial/music video and was produced by and featured students and local celebrities. The message targeted JCPS students and stressed the importance of math and science achievement. This group also participated on the B96 Christopher 2X show and worked with the musical artist R Prophet on this project. Partnering with the Kentucky Manufacturing Association - This team developed a partnership with the Kentucky Association of Manufacturers, which allowed direct communication with Kentucky manufacturers. The "Add it Up" campaign targeted Latin American and African American communities, logistics and construction companies through newsletters, articles and ads. Harnessing healthcare - This team is partnering with area hospitals to create an awareness campaign aimed at employees and visitors. The campaign offers hospitals posters, tri-fold brochures and buttons. Each hospital will be asked to include information on the math and science curricula in their internal publications and meetings. Additionally, each hospital will be asked to feature marketing materials at their institution for a specific month or months (e.g., April-September). Finally, the Bingham Fellows are planning a community-wide event to call people's attention to the importance of public support of the math and science curriculum changes. The public event is tentatively scheduled for August 10-11. Stay tuned for more details!
