2007 Bingham Fellows spotlight need for math and science excellence in schools
From January through August 2007, this year's Bingham Fellows worked to build public awareness and community demand for world class achievement in math and science in our schools.
Targeting parents, students, local corporations, and the general public, the group took their message to the streets, generating over 18 million impressions throughout the city.
The success of the group was the result of a well-orchestrated team effort. See names of team members and project descriptions .
The event culminated with the Add It Up Challenge on August 11-12.

What they did….
The Add it Up Challenge Weekend was designed to call the community’s attention to the importance of math and science education. The Fellows held the Add It Up 5k Run downtown and took over the Louisville Bats’ Game later that evening.
Who they worked with…
The Fellows worked with the Louisville Science Center, The Frazier International History Museum, Fleet Feet, and the Louisville Bats to make the weekend a smashing success.
What happened….
205 people registered for the run. Many stayed for the after party to enjoy demonstrations by University of Louisville, the Louisville Science Center, The Frazier International History Museum, Jefferson County Public Schools, Humana, GE Consumer & Industrial, and Raytheon. Each runner received a t-shirt.
10,107 people attended that evening’s Bats game. Over 1,300 t-shirts were given away, as well as over 2,500 brochures and bookmarks. |

Bingham Fellows' teams and project descriptions
The 2007 Bingham Fellows created activities and opportunities to engage the community in support of the $25 million GE-JCPS Math/Science Initiative. Over 18 million impressions were achieved.
Community Works/Outside School Team:
Becky Hellige (GE Consumer and Industrial), Emily Lawrence (The Glenview Trust Company), Leah Eggers (Humana Inc.), Treva Donnell (Commonwealth of Kentucky), Scott Prince (Louisville Collegiate School)
Project Description This team provided information on 3x8 bookmarks distributed to parents of children in the YMCA CEP programs. One side showcased facts regarding the U.S.’s globally in education. The other provided a list of jobs that apply math and science. The bookmark was sent to 42,000 families who use the YMCA Child Enrichment Program. Approximately 10,000 were distributed at the locations where banners where hung by the DREAMS team.
Financial Services Team:
Patrick Michael (Woodward, Hobson & Fulton, LLP), Alan Wheatley (Humana Inc.), Cathe Dykstra (Project Women), Jeff Kosse (Fifth Third Bank), Mickey Wilhelm (University of Louisville JB Speed School of Engineering), Greg Greenwood (Ernst & Young, LLP)
Project Description Between February and June, this team sent an informational e-mail to all Louisville-based employees of Fifth Third Bank and Humana, as well as other participating employers, inviting them to complete a survey containing questions designed to build awareness of the need to develop more college-bound math and science students. The e-mail and survey highlighted information on the GE-JCPS Math/Science Initiative. T-shirts and visors were provided to the first few hundred individuals who completed the survey.
Overall, 7,730 people opened the survey and 5,794 people completed the survey.
The survey is now a feature of the www.addituplouisville.com website.

Banners directed people to the Add It Up website to learn more about the initiative. Messages included items like, “This coffee brought to you by chemistry.” The banners created 2.8 million impressions over 6 weeks time. |
The team placed 31 banners and posters in heavily trafficked areas such as:

Project Description This group produced and distributed a public service announcement (PSA) made by JCPS students that stressed the importance of math and science achievement. As part of their project, the Team co-hosted the April 1 edition of “The Streets Are Talking” with Christopher 2X on B96 Radio. The show featured students talking about the changes to math and science curricula.
Additionally, the CHAMPS team provided 1 month of advertising space in 10 bus shelters throughout Louisville’s West End promoting Christopher 2X’s radio show and its tie to the Add It Up campaign.
